About Big 4 Breakthrough

City Skyline during Golden Hour

Hello Readers,

I started Big 4 Breakthrough to share what I have learned thus far as an accountant at one of the Big 4 Accounting Firms. When I was a college student and at the beginning of my career, I realized there were not many real resources for those looking for general accounting career advice. The resources I did find were older folks who did not really grasp what the younger generation of accountants are looking for.

Yes, there are tons of voices and Reddit forums talking about public accounting and the “joys” of an accounting career, but what I really wanted was to hear from the people in the trenches of accounting. The people who were top in their fields in accounting or finance even.

Some Background on Myself

I grew up thinking I wanted to be a doctor. Turns out I just wanted to make money and there were more ways to do that than by practicing medicine. In high school, I began learning about the stock market, real estate, and many other facets of business. I was interested immediately. I entered college as an undeclared business major, and then quickly chose to major in accounting as multiple trusted people told me Accounting is the best business major. Warren Buffett himself says “Accounting is the language of business.”

After graduating from college, I began my career at one of the Big 4 firms (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG). As promised by my college professors, it was a grind and the busy seasons do truly test your limits. After 2 years slaving away as an Associate, I was promoted to Senior Associate which is my current position. Making Partner is still 10+ years out and I’m not sure that is the path for me. But overall, I have loved the experience and have met brilliant people who will be friends for life.

Why should you listen to an anonymous blogger?

I am choosing to stay anonymous (for now) because 1) I don’t want the attention and 2) it is the best way for me to be 100% transparent.

Feel free to not believe a thing I say. I am writing because I enjoy reflecting on what I have learned and want to share my experience with others.
